How to stop spam with email aliases (one address per site)
Spam filters clean up after the fact. Giving each site its own address stops a lot of it reaching you at all, and tells you exactly where it came from.

Why one address per site works
When you use the same address everywhere, one leaky shop or breached forum puts that address on spam lists for good, and you cannot tell which site was responsible.
With a separate address per site or per category, junk only reaches the address that leaked. You can see the source in the To field and retire that one address without touching the rest.
A simple alias plan
- Keep your main address for people you know, your bank and anything you would hate to lose.
- Use one address for shopping and deliveries.
- Use one address for newsletters and free downloads.
- Use one address per project, side business or community you join.
- For a site you do not trust yet, use a separate address you would not mind retiring.
How to spot a leak
Look at which address the spam was sent to. If mail arrives at the address you only gave to one shop, that shop shared, sold or lost its list.
Plus addresses ([email protected]) can show this too, but spammers often strip the +tag, so a leak quickly reaches your main address. A separate address does not have that problem.
What to do when an address gets spammed
- Mark the messages as spam so your filter learns. In EmailGang you can mark any message as spam or not spam to correct the sorting.
- Unsubscribe from legitimate senders using their unsubscribe link. Do not click links in obvious junk.
- Change the address on accounts you still want, then stop using the leaked address.
- If the site leaked your address, consider changing that account password too.
Doing it with EmailGang
Each EmailGang clone is its own address with its own inbox that sends and receives, so a spammy shop never touches the inbox you use for work. Inbound mail to every clone is sorted into Inbox and Spam automatically.
The Free plan includes 1 clone; Starter includes 5, Pro 15 and Advanced 50, which is enough for a separate address per category. You can start on the shared emailgang.com domain with no DNS setup.
Frequently asked questions
- Do email aliases stop all spam?
- No. They stop spam from spreading to your other addresses and show you where it came from. You still need a spam filter for the address that leaked.
- How many aliases do I need?
- Most people do well with four or five: main, shopping, newsletters and one per project. You can add more as you go.
- Should I use a disposable address instead?
- Only for one-time downloads. For accounts you keep, use an address you control long term so you can still reset your password later.
